Hey DOODZ!
Allow me to say howdy and introduce, I am Glen Baxter. My brother and I
erstwhile maintained a resource for web constructors, comprising mainly of
animated gifs. For one reason or another we have had to renounce our legal
claim to that site and all assets contained therin, but we are rebuilding
our site.
Well I know you Flash designers aren't the best web constructors, but I bet
you have a few nice animated gifs floating about on those hard drives, and
if you want them included in the showcase then please send them to me!!!
I don't really approve of Flash (no plugins!!!!) but I saw some cool stuff
at www.multimediapalace.com ; check it out, the flash stuff is under 'web
animations' section.
Look forwards to hearing from you all, and any reactions to our new site:
http://baxters.narod.ru
All the best, peace and goodwill of the season,
Glen Baxter on behalf of The Baxter Brothers.

Oh dear, oh dear
You seem to have confused this for a flash based list. Whilst
many of
us use flash, the list is more focused on director development.

As I'm 'not the best web constructor', I wonder if you'll reconsider
your Dither Solids Golden Rule. I'd say never dither solids; they
look shite.

"Dude",
This is most certianly not the correct forum for this kind of
announcement. Please stick to IRC, USENET newsgroups and other places of
illegal media circulation. The works that are discussed here are
typically for paid projects or are things created by people for demo
purposes (eg: resume filler / addtional supporting matter to indicate
skill level) and are most certianly not for public domain use, other than
for entertainment value, as they are games.
Further, whislt an animated gif resource may in fact be handy
for a lot of
people, your annoucnement and language indicate that you have very little
intension of keeping attributation to the original designer or following
fair use policy, which is fairly rephrehensible. I assume that is why
your previous site was shut down. +1 point for at least being forward
about that issue.
I suggest, unless you are truly interested in game design and
/ or
implementation with Dirctor or Flash, leaving this list before the more
vocal and less polite members of the group read your message....

If you have nothing useful to add to this discussion apart from
niggling,
then please don't post to this list anymore
As it happens many listees have replied with a selection of
gifs which I
shall process and put online for the good of the web community.

Please don't think that was angry, it wasn't, nor was it meant to be.

Well, frankly: Yes.
We are a large list and don't take kindly to unsolictied email.
Espically ones that insult us by calling us not "the best web
consructors." If you really would like to start an animtated gif archive
and would like quality work, a simple note saying what your doing, and a
url to refrence with details and links to send would of been much more
wise choice. An email that used professional tones and words that exsist
in the OED would have been even better. While "dude" is in the OED,
"DoOdZ" isn't, in fact it smacks of very infintile script kiddie speak,
a
subculture for which I (and many others on this list, as has already
been noted) have no respect.
The point is that your discourse is completly not on topic to
this list
and your attitude is quite negative, as one of the owners of this list
it's my job to make sure things don't stray too far, and that the level of
discoruse remains at a fairly high level - Hence me asking you to either
leave or please stay on topic and be polite and civil.

Yes, I am paranoid, many of the list members here will confirm
that. Are
you high? What would make you think that anyone would want to give you
anything of quaility when you have already noted that you've had your site
shut down due to leagal difficulties? You're certianly not winning any
trust by flippantly refusing to explain why your site was shut down, so
we must assume the worst, until you prove our doubts incorrect.
[snip]
> If you have nothing useful to add to this discussion apart

I think that I just did - I informed you of the proper etiquitte
of this
list. I am one of the owners of this list, and I own that machine it runs
on hence my posting to you and the list. Regardless of weather you think
that I have nothing useful to add, the fact that I own the box means I
have a bit more leeway in poking my nose in various threads.
Please take this entire message as your one and only warning:
Do not spam the list with rambling or insulting notices for your sites
anymore. If you'd like to make an announcement about your site, that
you think is topical to a group of game designers, please post it in a
brief message that is not insulting or childish. Further infractions of
this will force me to ban you from this list and file a complaint with
the abuse address of your ISP and their upstream ISP.

They not only don't look good, they dont save space. I tried a solid
block of a non-web palette color and got the following results:
Solid: 4,065 bytes
Pattern Dither: 8,317 bytes
Diffusion Dither: 24,274 bytes
I suppose if you have to use a web safe palette, and you really
really need a specific color, dithering is better than nothing. But
it certainly doesn't save space.
I believe this is not true for photographs. If you overlay a
photo
with a regular pattern, I'm pretty sure the image compresses better.
